Dependencies are the protagonists of the homelessness phenomenon. These can be broadly categorized into two major groups: substances and alcohol. Typically, the former is consumed by younger individuals, while the latter, alcohol, is consumed by the elderly segment. In September 2021, we met a group of young homeless people with various addictions, each coming from different backgrounds and having diverse stories. Some of them have been in this situation for a long time, while others were just starting their journey.
Their story began in Vama Veche. After a summer in which the streets of the coast served as their homes, they became friends and decided to come to Bucharest together. They found temporary shelter to escape the autumn cold.
We met them on a Thursday during our recurring activity in Colțea Park, #subcerulliber. Hearing their stories and realizing that they were in need of help, #sincron project was born. The project aimed to inform them about PAFA housing options, other PAFA services, document recovery services, and donations such as clothing, food, and hygiene items.
Changes in the community are built through shared experiences.
From this group, Cătălin’s perseverance in making a change stood out. He attended every meeting we scheduled, whether it was sunny or rainy, and we initiated a fundraising campaign for him to return to Norway, where his girlfriend had been waiting for him for months.
Together with the donations received, we managed to provide him accommodation while he waited for all the travel documents for his flight. During this time, the donations also covered daily meals, hygiene, and transportation expenses.
The mission was accomplished when Cătălin landed at Bergen Airport and reunited with his girlfriend.
